Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that involves the insertion of thin needles into the skin at specific referral points on the body to affect referral action locally, distally or internally, and as a prompt for homeostasis.
Acupuncture can be used to treat a wide range of conditions such as pain and inflammation, neuropathy, frozen shoulder, TMJ, stress, anxiety, insomnia, fatigue, nausea, digestive disorders, reproductive health, restless leg syndrome, fibromyalgia, arthritis, as well as skin conditions such as acne, scarring, wrinkles and elasticity. Acupuncture can also be effective for and remediation of some side effects from chemotherapy.
Acupuncture is considered a safe treatment when performed by a licensed practitioner administering appropriate and informed point prescriptions, combination protocols and techniques for various conditions. It is important to disclose any medical conditions or medications you are taking to your practitioner before beginning treatment.
No. Therapeutic acupuncture needling is done with ultra thin, medical grade, silicon-coated filament needles that are often not felt. Though a dull sensation is sought for an indication of point stimulation, effective needling does not depend on this sensation.
Eating before acupuncture is a good idea. Hydrating prior to, and and eating something soon after acupuncture may be more important if receiving a treatment following an overnight or day-long fast, skipped meals and snacks.
What you do following an acupuncture treatment will influence the success of your visit. It is best to take it easy, drink water, eat a little food, and let your body respond to the treatment without exertion disrupting metabolic or homeostatic effect. It may not be apparent during, or immediately following a treatment, but acupuncture can be quite powerful. Depending on your treatment, you may want a nap after. If you do, and time permits, you should drink water, eat a little something and take one. You may not need a nap, but being at ease after a treatment is generally how you will get the most from any acupuncture protocol.
